I agree with Zwolle84's review above. The film is a series of horror clichés – at most the mix of exorcism and morgue is original – but it is also effectively scary and therefore well made. The film does, as always, become less scary as the 'monster' appears more often and more explicitly, but that is overcome here because the story is well put together and remains exciting. All the side issues in the beginning turn out to be essential later on to understand what is going on. The film is predictable but that doesn't bother you: you are almost looking forward to what is to come. In particular, you expect the Thriller moment at the end of Michael Jackson who looks back and turns out to have devilish eyes, but the film has deliberately made the ending a bit more subtle and almost ambiguous: Megan doesn't suddenly have blue eyes but she says she gets stronger every day killing a fly. Apparently that means she has conquered her own demons, but in reality the demon that passed from Grace to her is getting stronger every day with the fly as an indication that the demon is present in her. Precisely because the film is a proverbial but giving something real – 'overcoming your demons' as with an alcohol addiction – a supernatural shape, the film elevates itself far above the standard horror films that are just clinging to each other with nonsense.

All in all, a fine, satisfying horror film and probably the scariest I've seen in recent years.

The Possession of Hannah Grace

Solid. Mortuaries are of course the best locations for a horror movie, and The Possession of Hannah Grace takes advantage of that. Director Diederik van Rooijen delivers an atmospheric horror film with an excellent acting Shay Mitchell in the lead role. Compliments also to the young Kirby Johnson, who certainly radiates threat as Hannah Grace. There are also some nice scary moments. The murders are poorly portrayed, and how it all ends is just not announced by Van Rooijen in neon letters. Would have liked something more subtle.

A beautiful lead actress and an atmospheric location (a morgue), but not a particularly good script and few scary moments. However, the flexibility of the actress who plays Hannah is a plus and the deep cuts on her body also look convincing. Why the lights keep going out is a mystery to me, possibly energy savings?

Gewoon een horror film, niks bijzonder. Prima voor een doordeweekse avond
