Sometimes you see a film that you have seen 100 times before, and it is inferior in every way.

Ch'ing Shaonien Na Cha is such a film. Not that he's really that bad, but at some point you just get tired of it. Once again, some passive and nihilistic Asian youth who no longer see the point, and fall into semi-crime (some stealing, and other minor nonsense). Sorry, but I've seen it many times before, and much better. The film looks ugly, and seems to be filmed with the same apathy as the main characters radiate. Musically there is also nothing to experience, and the story is so 13 in a dozen that I didn't even feel like making an effort.

Some form of entertainment in this movie was recognizing some old games (SFII, that kind of thing). 1* is a heavy verdict, but I don't see any point in the existence of this film. Give me a Millennium Mambo then.

Film that is right up my alley in terms of themes and effect. It's just a shame that the people themselves interest me a lot less. I still had the most with the girl who seemed the most normal. Bored, but without a seemingly strange living situation and just with a job. On the other hand, there is a somewhat rebellious son and of course that petty criminal who I have little sympathy for anyway, although most of them are played in a beautifully subdued and sensitive manner, which even gives them some sympathy, but I would have preferred to see other characters, then it would have been a could have been a masterpiece. Now it seems more like a film of people who turn against society because they are too lazy, not because society is so bad for them. The girl seemed to have the latter the most, although her background is unknown.

However, the direction is very strong and clearly comes from the Taiwanese New Wave. And although Tsai occasionally lacks the peace, rhythm and sensitivity of Hou - especially the motorcycle rides are too short to hypnotize - he makes up for this with an extremely good sense of framing and especially choosing meaningful locations. A camera stands almost carelessly on a corner somewhere and no emphasis is placed on anything, but you get just enough information so that the big city where it takes place really comes to life. Whether that means streets full of scooters or nightlife with neon lights. The city is atmospheric in itself and Tsai knows how to film this. Beautiful music too, with a nice mix of electro and ambient (although I know that recurring tune from somewhere). 4.0*.

This is my type of movie. Little speech, atmospheric images and a dormant story.

Rebels of the Neon God portrays a few searching young people in a large Taiwanese city in the early 90s. Although the atmosphere felt more 80s to me personally.
Three boys and a girl are each looking for some form of entertainment, income and meaning, but they don't seem to find it in the sad everydayness of the metropolis. Drinking games, video games and the search for sex are the only distractions from the dull existence they have.

I was reminded of the film Two Lane Blacktop, another nihilistic portrait of aimlessness. But with a completely different atmosphere. The haunting synthesizer soundtrack inevitably returns, just like the flooding in the apartment. Whatever these young people try, for better or for worse, it doesn't seem to make much difference.

The door that the runaway boy's father finally leaves ajar offers a glimmer of hope, but that's all.

Not a cheerful film, but very beautiful. Recommended for the enthusiast.

4*
