The Field Guide to Evil plot

"A global anthology into dark folklore"

'The Field Guide to Evil' is an omnibus film about dark folklore. Stories about possession and cursing are interspersed with stories about love, lust and jealousy. Throughout the ages, the communities have been fascinated and afraid of such myths and folktales, which form the basis of what is today called the horror genre. 'Al Karisi' tells the story of the eponymous evil spirit that many believe targets pregnant women. 'Die Trud' links to an Austrian tradition and is set in the eighteenth century. The segment focuses on girls and forbidden love and is about monsters that choke people in their sleep. 'Island of the Devourer of Souls' is an almost entirely non-verbal short film set in East Prussia in 1850. For some, human hearts are on the menu there.

Nice omnibus project.

The premise is simple: folklore and demons around the world. And especially with a focus on Europe. India and the US make the whole thing a bit more worldly, but those stories are a bit disappointing. Anyone who likes to watch an omnibus movie will not be bored with this.

Not the most well-known names, but that doesn't really bother me. It is important that there is a lot of variation and the film certainly succeeds in that. In terms of style, it might not have been a bit wilder, it is mainly subdued horror with lots of fantasy influences, but every short still knows how to do its own thing, which makes it always looking forward to a new movie.

The Turkish part was by far the best, the American part the faintest. Seemed like the only thing that stood out to me. It is a pity that the best shorts are almost all in the front, so that the second part is a bit disappointing. But other than that, not much to complain about, quite an interesting film.

3.0*

I thought The Field Guide to Evil was a pretty nice anthology, even if anthologies aren't really my taste. It often turns out to be difficult to build atmosphere and tell an interesting story within such a short time; and of course it is always a collection of stories that can differ quite a bit in atmosphere and plot. Here we see eight segments with some sort of theme about folklore and demons from around the world. And that certainly suits me, but as far as I'm concerned, subjects like this come out better if a longer and more extensive atmosphere can be built. Still, there are some very nice works here, in which I particularly liked the segments from Poland and Turkey, and a number of episodes certainly showed promise. In the end I was left a bit unsatisfied, with a number of stories (India and Germany for example) that didn't interest me so much while I would have preferred to see other stories as long players.

Eight short films by eight different directors from eight different countries. You could call the genre folk horror. Except for the first video with those two nice girls, I found the rest boring. With the low point being the Greek film that hurts your eyes and flies in all directions. Also completely incomprehensible. I read somewhere that you should like a film like that. Well, this clearly doesn't suit me.
