Irene lives with her husband Klaus and their four sons near Rio de Janeiro. The door is jammed, the tap is leaking, but there is no lack of love in this slightly chaotic household. Director Gustavo Pizzi and lead actress Karine Teles co-wrote the script for this phenomenal, ultra-realistic film about an average family in a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. Teles plays mother Irene, who endures a rollercoaster of emotions every day as she tries to keep afloat in a household with a husband [Otávio Müller] who is trying to cope with the financial problems and four sons who each in their own way cause problems that Irene tries to solve. The house has its fair share of flaws and when sister Sõnia [Adriana Esteves] is abused by her husband, Irena takes her and her son into the family as well.
This film depicts the complex daily life of a family in an unprecedented way. The ensemble acting is so convincing that you could easily forget that we are dealing with actors here. The completely spontaneous acting and overlapping dialogues are perfectly written and performed by a uniformly sublime cast. Teles gives unsurpassed shape to the sometimes extreme emotional changes of her character when joy suddenly turns into sadness and vice versa. There is a lot of fun to be had in the details: the family has to enter their own house through the window like a burglar and the 12-year-old son who (it seems) walks through the city for hours with his tuba! But certainly also enjoy the chemistry between the children when the twins are in the bath or the desperate attempts to get the twin brothers to eat their meal. And try to keep it dry during the final scene. Realism has rarely been so entertaining!

Benzinho tells the life of an average Brazilian family with all its worries. The fact that the eldest son was noticed by a German scout to leave for a German handball club is just one of the many plot stories in the film. Almost every character has his own side story. Pizzi succeeded in making one beautiful whole out of that big hodgepodge without one really standing out.
It is not Fernando who is central to the film, but the mother Irene who has trouble with all the changes around her. Beautiful role by the way of Karine Teles who carries the film effortlessly. One of her strongest scenes for me her fear and nervousness when her exam was corrected. Sublime acting scene.
She is a jack of all trades and is the glue of her family and beyond. Caring for her sister, the financial compass for her husband, the mother hen for her sons... She is all of these things.
Octavio Müller also did an excellent job. For the rest also a fine cinematography and clever editing by Pizzi. Benzinho is a nice film about a loving family that stands up for each other and supports each other through thick and thin. Beautiful!

Sympathetic, if ultimately somewhat unstable drama about a chaotic household on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The focus is on mother Irene, who has to do her utmost every day to keep family life on track. The characters are endearing and the acting is solid, but the individual plot lines are not very impressive and the script just meanders along, without any real ups and downs. The light-heartedly depicted events are quite entertaining, but do not stick.
