The Poetess plot
“My poetry destroys, and truly destroys,” said burqa-wearing Saudi Arabian poet Hissa Hilal during one of her Abu Dhabi TV appearances in the hugely popular Million's Poet, the Arabic equivalent of Idols. With her daring, rebellious poems, she became the first female finalist of the television show, which attracts 70 million viewers per broadcast in the Arab world. With a critical poem about fatwas she broke the taboo on public discussion about religious rules and became world news.
