"They survived the second World War, now they must survive the cleanup"
It is May 1945, just days after the end of the war. A group of German prisoners of war are taken to Denmark and forced to dismantle the 2 million land mines scattered by the German occupiers along the West Coast. Sergeant Carl Leopold Rasmussen is responsible for the group of young, weakened men. Like many Danes, he hates the Germans. He takes out his anger on the prisoners.

How well the tone is set by Sergeant Rasmussen in that initial phase, it is clear in that sense that the Germans had to count on sympathy after the war of only a few countries they occupied at the time. That of Hitler's cruel and terrifying force there were only brainwashed teenagers left who knew how to blow their butt, in that sense too. An interesting combination has been formed, two parties that are certainly not open to each other. A great interplay between the boys and the officer arises. Distrust, fear, hatred, but then care, sympathy and fraternization. Very well thought out, the backlash that the sergeant has after the death of his dog.
A beautiful drama with many facets and emotion. Great movie, one of the better ones I've seen this year.

Under sandet highlights a piece of history that was virtually unknown to me. An interesting aspect also from WWII, where the two million German mines placed on Danish beaches had to be dismantled by young German prisoners of war. What follows are extremely exciting and heart-pounding scenes where every second could be the last. It is logical that one will explode every now and then, but it is not really predictive as a viewer. That alone will keep you on the edge of your seat. Any wrong jerky move can be done...
The Danish howler sergeant gets 14 boys under his wing and hates them to the depths of his soul. Yet he thaws and a mutual respect develops. Also interesting to note is that Denmark opted to also highlight their dark side of the war. Nice piece of self-criticism. It is not given to everyone. In addition to the tension, also beautiful images of the desolate chilly dunes. Moller also did an excellent job as Sergeant Rasmussen. The young lads also did well and the fear and psychological suffering is strongly visible.
Zandsvliet delivered a credible film. Drama and thriller go hand in hand. One to cherish!

Under Sandet is a beautiful film adaptation of a piece of history that I was not aware of before. Besides that it is interesting to know, it is also beautifully filmed and marketed. I also thought The Outsider was a great movie. This director does his homework very well. The acting is also top notch. Great movie this!
