Beautifully filmed, feminist War/Drama film by director Xavier Beauvois, in which the emphasis is not on the plot, but on the characters and atmosphere.

This story takes place in France in 1915, during the First World War. Because her sons are fighting in the trenches, farmer Hortense Sandrail (Nathalie Baye) calls in the help of young Francine Riant (Iris Bry). She seems to do a great job, but when one of the sons returns and falls for Francine, and when American soldiers report to the farm a little later, Hortense feels she has to intervene.

The period picture is beautiful and the choice to show not the muddy trenches, but the tractors in the fields (where the women manage the farms) is refreshing. The scene in which German soldiers with gas masks are put to the sword is beautifully filmed, but ends as a transparent copy of a famous scene from the Star Wars film "The Empire Strikes Back (1980)".

All in all, slow cinema for the enthusiast.

A film about WWI without any real battle scenes.

A captivating portrait of rural life driven by and burdened by the consequences of war.

Cinematically very beautiful with beautiful images of people, animals, nature and work... and a story that holds up.

Nathalie Baye, Laura Smet and Iris Bry are excellent as les gardiennes and the care for decor, costuming and make-up in the film is to be appreciated. It all seems very authentic.

Some emotional moments, without over-sentimentality and a somewhat moving ending when Iris Bry brings two beautiful, appropriate chansons: "Amours fragiles" and "La Chanson des Blés d'Or).

Xavier Beauvois, not new to the genre ("Des Hommes et des Dieux", "Le petit Lieutenat", also with Nathalie Baye), brings here a much-appreciated ode to the woman at home.

Authentic-looking rural chronicle about the daily worries of the home front during the First World War. After a flat opening, the film gradually starts to get under your skin.

Farm life is beautifully portrayed. Impressive debut by Iris Bry. Nathalie Baye shows once again that she has lost none of her versatility as the years go by. A beautiful film.
