Good.

It is indeed reminiscent of A Monster Calls, but also of films like Where the Wild Things Are. Youth films that mix drama and fantasy, often with a somewhat dark edge. It is also clear to see that there is also some Japanese blood behind this.

It's just a pity that the drama part wasn't really up to par. Barbara is a rather annoying character and the dramatic background was quite predictable. If you do choose a mix like this, make sure that the drama actually adds something, or at least that it works.

The fantasy part is fun. Lots of detail, beautifully captured and just enough in terms of CG. In the end maybe a bit too much of a good thing (although that is also because it gets a bit cornier), but for a film like this everything looks very neat. Acting is also certainly good, you really can't blame Wolfe for Barbara being just a bit of an annoying character.

Would have preferred to see it without the extra drama, since the fantasy part is much more convincing, but otherwise a nice youth film, which certainly manages to come out in an original way in terms of fantasy.

3.5*

I think that with this film, the anticipation in advance can lead to a disappointing viewing experience because it is a different kind of film than many will expect. Since I prefer not to watch trailers or learn too much about a movie beforehand, I didn't have any problems with that. I therefore had a great time watching this coming-of-age-like drama with a thin fantasy layer.

A fantasy film about a teenager who is clearly struggling with problems, which is by no means entirely clear what is right. A fascinating character, although the role is not particularly memorable. The film is in the vein of Where The Wild Things Are, A Monster Calls and even Pan's Labyrinth.

Madison Wolfe has to pull the film, which she laboriously but nevertheless succeeds in. She lacks a strong opponent, so that only she and her monsters have to carry the film. But you feel that there is something about her character and that keeps you curious as a viewer. The fantasy is also nicely done so that it has become a small intimate fantasy drama.
