Below Her Mouth plot

"Where desire lives"

Jasmine thought she had created solid structures for the rest of her life. She is a successful fashion journalist and engaged to Rile, while now planning the future with her partner. But one night, it's clear that Jasmine's life plans are crumbling. While going out, she meets Dallas, a fresh, quirky roofer. It lasts only a few days and the two women have an affair. To Jasmine, the new relationship feels like a fantasy and very different from her partnership with Rile. But soon things change.

A fitting title for this sensitive drama about the love affair between two women, one of whom is engaged to a man. The first part of the film is practically a series of sex scenes, which are, incidentally, sensitively portrayed. The focus initially seems to be more on lust than love. Only after the fiancé returns home does the film gain some depth and thus gain in quality. The final scene is the proverbial icing on the cake.

Considering the difficulty level, excellent acting from the protagonists.

I can only partially agree with IH88's reference to La Vie d'Adèle. I think that's more of a coming-of-age film, while this is purely a romance drama. The only similarity is that both films are dramas about lesbians.

I read the comparison here with La Vie d'Adèle, but that one had more depth to its characters and was more of a coming-of-age story. Below Her Mouth remains somewhat superficial, with a woman who cheats and discovers she also likes women. Not particularly compelling characters, but the film itself is well-crafted (or not). A cozy, softly erotic film, but well-made. I read that, except for two men (who operated a crane), the entire crew was female. That probably created a more relaxed atmosphere on set. By which I mean, everyone felt comfortable filming.

About Jasmine, engaged to a man, who runs into a woman at a club, starts an affair, and wonders if she's been telling herself all these years that she's not. Director April Mullen's Below Her Mouth is a film with explicit sex scenes. Despite the abundance of nudity and explicit sex, Below Her Mouth is certainly not a thrilling film.

What's missing from the film is the story behind it. Two women meet and are seemingly made for each other. The film only demonstrates this through sex scenes. The moments surrounding it that are important for showing the spiritual depth of the relationship are barely present. There's no interesting character development visible, let alone much attention paid to telling a compelling story. The film seems to have been made solely to show physical lust. The fact that true love also has a spiritual component is irrelevant in this film.

The characters are uninteresting. Jasmine, who thought she was attracted to men but apparently lied to herself for years and now suddenly falls for a woman, is a superficially developed character. And the woman who changes her life, works in a masculine profession, acts tough, and yet is also very sensitive, is a cliché. There's no curve to the characters whatsoever. Only the curves of the flesh remain. The sex, while being quite explicit, is thankfully portrayed sensually and tastefully. This way, you still have something to entertain yourself with during the film. Otherwise, it's utterly boring.
