Psychopaths plot

Several deranged serial killers sow death and destruction in one night. One of them is Alice, a young woman who thinks she is a 1950s movie star. She stays in a mental institution, but manages to escape one day. Alice kidnaps some people and tortures them in a cellar. Meanwhile, a deranged cop, a housewife and a hit man cause a lot of trouble elsewhere.

Mixed bag. Keating has been on my list for a while, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. My girlfriend already recommended his Darling (2015) (Keating's highest rated). Psychopaths shows enough potential and seems to fit perfectly into the oeuvre of a director who is still developing and wants to try out all kinds of things. Too bad he is not consistent in all those stylistic exercises and at no point does he really dare to go for it. This goes wrong in particular in the editing, as well as because of the confusing story. One moment it looks atmospheric and somewhat experimental, the next moment it is bland and cheap. I still don't know what the film wants to be exactly. It is not really style over substance, it is not very dirty, not quite black comedy... A bit of everything = a bit of nothing. Still, this is a ton more interesting to watch than directors who play it completely safe, so props for that.

Director Mickey Keating deliberately seeks originality in Psychopaths, which gives the film a relatively unusual approach. It results in a whole that focuses mainly on the design and not so much on the content, in which various (disturbed) characters with their own traits are alternated. Unfortunately, Keating processes this fact rather unbalanced, which gives some cast members much more space than others. Very solid names such as Angela Trimbur are neglected as a result, and the lack of an end goal is not exactly positive. When it comes to horror, the murders are also a bit tame, despite the grim approach. Keating actually comes to a reasonable conclusion on all levels, but has no control over the variation and atmosphere, which makes Psychopaths seem more boring than intended. The ending also gives an unfinished impression.

Okay, as a director you can just do it and provide a basic horror story with the necessary tension or you choose a special path that is mainly focused on the audiovisual and striking gore moments. Unfortunately, the film does not manage to tick either of these boxes. The content is not very interesting and the various serial killers are presented in a confusing way. A bit of a jumble. It never gets exciting and the bloody moments are there, but often too tamely presented to the viewer. Okay, the audiovisual still knows something to bring, but often also very variable in level. In short, a very weak horror film! 2/10
