Wow this is bad. Hallmark will be jealous. Thought it would be more fantasy or adventure, but mainly cheesy romance between beautiful people. Well, I'm talking about the first 45 minutes because after that it's turned off.

Mwa.

I would have ignored the film if Scodelario did not participate, because I think she is becoming more and more fun as an actress. Even though she doesn't really choose the right roles and places herself too often in basic things, there always seems to be a driving force that makes her more convincing. Perhaps she will soon have to choose a project that will give her more space.

The King's Daughter is a very old-fashioned fairy tale with a modern twist. However, while writing the film they forgot a number of holes in the story, because it jumps from one topic to another a little too often. Messy, sometimes too easy. The first half has a pass thanks to the humor and surprisingly enough references to adult topics, but the more serious second half crashes too much.

It's a shame that it ultimately gets bogged down in a story that is completely old-fashioned and loses its more modern slant. It's quite a shame because NcNamara actually seemed to have plans for his film. It looks beautiful with a good eye for detail. The film regularly overflows with a cheerful atmosphere and the effects are also not bad.

The story has enough pace and I found Brosnan's role quite funny. The nice thing is that it manages to distinguish itself a number of times in nice ways. The unfortunate thing is that it forgets that it was distinctive, especially towards the finale. I wanted to give it a passing grade, but the somewhat messy progression causes me to leave the film at a 2.5*.

A fairytale.

Anyone who expected a historically sound epic at the court of Louis XIV will be in for a rude awakening. And that's not just because a mermaid plays along - a nice role by Fan Bingbing perhaps, but unfortunately it's completely underwater so you hardly see anything of it. To compensate, Kaya Scodelario is on screen a lot, and that makes up for something - her cute face fits perfectly with this type of film, and so does Pierce Brosnan with his greasy long gray hair.

What is really far below par is the end of the rather drawn-out narrative. Poor Bingbing, as a magic mermaid she still has a hard time in those last minutes. The writers apparently didn't know whether or not to create a cliffhanger for a possible sequel. Never mind, some is enough.
