The Dinner plot

"How far would you go to protect your children?"

Two couples go out for dinner one night in a restaurant. They talk about everyday things. But in the meantime, they avoid what they should be talking about: their children. The two sons of both couples have done something together that could ruin their future. So far, only vague images of the two have been shown on TV and the investigation into their identities is stuck. But how much longer? Two men, two women, two sons – who dares to make a decision about the future of their own child?

Sour reviews here, and rightly so. It's amazing that they can turn such a good basic idea into such a crappy film. I haven't read Koch's book, but you don't have to be a bookworm to understand that with such an intriguing subject (how far are you willing to go as parents to protect your child after a mistake?) you can make a strong psychological thriller. to make. In my opinion, the Dutch version Het Diner was only half successful (timid execution where the enormous potential was not fully utilized), but still a lot better than this American interpretation because they really make a mess of it. A film that is far too long, with lengthy dialogues, poor acting and a director who cannot make a point of anything. I usually think Gere is quite good, but here he is more arrogant and annoying than ever. Coogan's style is completely wrong for this role and makes Jacob Derwig look like a world-class actor. The ladies in this film hardly get the chance to make something of their subordinate roles. The Dinner is a failure of a level that you would hardly expect in 2017.

One long misrepresentation. What an incredibly annoying mess. Especially that Steve Coogan. I didn't like him twice in Stan and Ollie. In The Dinner he is four times nothing. This film was indeed a real drama, but certainly not a thriller. In addition, there is a dull ending that makes this two-hour piece of misery 'complete'. 0 stars from me..... Come on, half a star, for that nice girlfriend of that son of a bitch.

Messy, often incoherent American film adaptation of Herman Koch's book. There is little wrong with the impressive cast and Steve Coogan and Richard Gere do a fine job here, but the script wanders in all directions. Especially the incomprehensible segment about Gettysburg, which is edited as a kind of psychedelic trip, hits like a pincer on a pig. A strong scene here and there, but as a whole this is a cumbersome, ugly filmed affair.
