Variety is a film that relies largely on atmosphere. The grimy atmosphere of the porn cinema, and by extension of all of New York, is portrayed in a very powerful way.
That grimy vibe of New York comes across particularly strongly when Christine decides to chase one of the movie theater customers after he leaves her behind at a baseball game. Still, just a tad more could have been done with the tension during these chases. Not that she actually needed to be caught by Louie, but perhaps it could have been played with a little more.
Sandy McLeod also delivers a strong performance as Christine, who loses herself more and more in the world of porn. The way she talks to her boyfriend Mark by describing porn scenes in detail, and how she dresses at the end, makes it clear that she has become completely obsessed.
A well-made film that barely reaches 20 votes here. It is also interesting that the main character of such a film is played by a woman, although there were still some opportunities to turn it into a real blockbuster. The ending also doesn't really provide a climax where Christine calls Louie to meet up, but otherwise leaves the viewer in the dark.
