Super Dark Times plot

Surprising film that ends in a fateful way due to a bizarre turn. A bit over the top at the end. Still, the story kept me captivated from start to finish.

Dark times

Nice, but somewhat exaggerated title, which I find a bit exaggerated for all the attention it gets.

The point for me was mainly that I found Super Dark Times way too slow and the story too thin to fill 100 minutes. The plot talks very tantalizingly about exploring the twilight zone between adolescence and adulthood, lust and love, courage and fear, and good and evil, but in fact these are just a few tantalizing words. The bottom line is that a tragic accident takes place in which one of the two involved develops a fascination with murder and torment and the other involved go through a normal grieving process. This in itself is an interesting premise, were it not that you never seem to get into the head of Charlie. Okay he completely loses his mind and the accident triggered this, but to what extent was this the trigger and what else was behind it? As a viewer, we don't really get anything from the family situation and any other influences.

All this makes this crime thriller a bit dragging and sometimes boring. It remains too superficial and too meager. And how Zach didn't drop dead after stabbing so many swords is a mystery to me.

3.0*

Super Dark Times

What starts as an atmospheric coming of age story quickly turns into a horror-like nightmare. That mix also makes Super Dark Times such a strong film, although you have to go along with the complete change that the film is going through. After the 'sword incident' you have to switch a button, but then you will be rewarded with a strong and exciting last part.

Phillips' atmospheric directing also helps, as does Campbell, Tahan and Cappuccino's acting. The focus in the final scenes on Allison is well done, and I'd love to see how she picks up her life again. Everyone can give it their own interpretation (Is she a victim? Accomplice? Or is she just fascinated by murder and blood?).
