Great noir but not entirely convincing with that quasi documentary voice over. Unnecessary and superfluous.

Nice pictures, quite atmospheric here and there but otherwise somewhat uncertainly delivered. As a nocturnal manhunt film, it does not quite manage to maintain the tension in a further sober running time of 80 min. Nice and entertaining but nothing special.

After Hollywood's much-maligned glorification of criminals in the 1930s, it was no wonder that it tried to right the wrongs in later years with films that showed the police at their most heroic. As Reed Hadley's reverent, sonorous voice-over repeatedly emphasizes, this story is a faithful reconstruction of the manhunt for a man [Richard Baseheart] who shot a police officer and then cleverly misled the police for a long time. The film provides a fascinating insight into the workings of the police, with a lot of attention to information gathering, interrogation techniques and of course the way in which the police try to lure the target into a trap. This can sometimes seem a bit contrived, such as when the police gather a group of eyewitnesses and gradually manage to get a good description, but the film is never dull. Baseheart is also excellent as the cunning, ruthless killer.

I found it very entertaining, especially the last 20 minutes. Wouldn't "the third man" have looked askance at this?
