Hannie Caulder plot

"The first lady gunfighter."

Violent brothers Frank, Rufus and Emmett Clemens are on the run from Mexican police after a bank robbery. Along the way, the trio stops at a horse exchange station. They kill the owner Caulder and rape his attractive wife Hannie. Then the three brothers set fire to the station, leaving Hannie for dead. Hannie is rescued by passing bounty hunter Thomas Luther Price. Hannie is intent on revenge and, after initial reluctance, she is trained as a gunslinger. The amiable gunsmith Bailey, who used to work for the Confederates, makes a special Colt.45 for Hannie.

Watched it again today, but now via the German Blu-ray release of 2016 (recommended)

That looks really eye-catching.

Still, that's not the reason why I'm giving the film another half star now.

I've grown to appreciate it more and more over the years.

If I were to rate him only as "non-US western", I would rate him even higher, as he leaves most of those productions behind.

But I'm not going to do that.

What really struck me this time was Ken Thorne's brilliant score, which really touched me.

For the bickering bandit trio, including at least one psychopath (played by Strother Martin), I couldn't even muster a smile this time.

Strange how your perception can change over time.

It makes the film even more grim in my experience.

I've said it before, Robert Culp plays the strongest role I've ever seen from him.

What a joy to see him so busy.

The beautiful landscape shots come into their own even better via the Blu-ray.

This one often ends up in the player (with life and well-being )

This movie surprised us! We just felt like watching a western again and came across this one in the list of movies we haven't seen yet.

Raquel Welch usually guarantees a reasonably good film if she has contributed to it and Robert Culp and Christopher Lee are also often of the highest quality stories.

Fortunately, that turned out to be the case with this "Hannie Caulder".

A good story that immediately caught on with us, also because of the (sometimes lame) humor that the "Bandiet brothers" propagated. As said, a good story, beautifully filmed and the right characters in the right places. It is a pity that it lasts so short, after less than an hour and a half the curtain falls again.

Our rating: a 7+.

The cowboy film is mainly dominated by male characters. That makes sense in a way, since cow-girls were much thinner. Since I'm not a fan of all that male testosterone banging, I chose this one. Story is simple, standard revenge but with a leading lady who wants to wield the revolver. The movie is actually more build up and the whole revenge part is barely 10 minutes. The gunfights are nice and bloody at times. But as Brix already indicated, it looks suspiciously like ketchup, although spaghetti sauce seems more appropriate. I can't say much more about it, nice for once but like other cowboy movies it leaves me indifferent.
