I'm really amazed that so many people take this movie seriously.

It just seems to me to come across as some kind of black comedy about a dysfunctional family/friends circle around a sociopath, because come on, it doesn't make any sense at all. What farfetched nonsense.

And the fact that you see the festivities of the now dirty old man behind the camera everywhere makes it all even more sinister

No, as a comedy it is funny, nice villainous humor. Until the last half hour or so. Then the rack is gone.

Huppert is great.

But that this has so many stars and even wanted to let Cannes win... wtf? Such a stupid stupid movie??

Peculiar Verhoeven.

A somewhat unusual film that has quite a lot to say about it, but it really isn't. There is really a lot going on, but not much is being done with it. Bit strange because they are all "big" events that other directors fill an entire film with. But in Elle they are apparently just there to show Huppert's reaction.

That in itself is fun for an hour. The film becomes more grotesque and all characters seem to have their briefcase of secrets, the problem is that Huppert's character actually reacts the same to everything. She struggles through each development with a kind of venomous, semi-apathetic cynicism.

After an hour you realize that, but then another hour follows, with more of the same. And if you're still wondering where it's all going... well, 10 minutes from the end most of the storylines are nicely spun out with each their semi-happy ending. Credits roll across the screen and actually you're looking at those credits pretty much the same if Huppert's character has behaved throughout the movie.

Funny, not very interesting and much more than a cynical smile. Oh, and quite an ugly game with some serious framerate issues from the looks of it. And that on a PS4, no advertising for Sony either

2.5*

Thought it was a really good movie. Especially because the character of Huppert is excellently developed. Her behavior that is illogical to some fits perfectly with the past-ravaged character. It is therefore a character study that you do not see much. I also never understand the point of safely applying your own sense of logic from the couch. Lack of empathy will not do the movie experience any good, I thought it was very accurate and worth it.
