Als Wir Träumten plot
In a suburb of Leipzig, shortly after the collapse of East Germany, Rico, Daniel, Paul and Mark grow up in a recently reunited country. Yesterday's rules no longer apply to today. The boys turn day into night and the streets into a playground. They spend their days stealing cars, experimenting with drugs and discovering a new club. Everything is in a state of change and decay and everyone is full of dreams.

Leipzig in former East Germany just after the fall of the Wall. The young protagonists in the film have little prospect and relieve boredom by causing a ruckus and engaging in petty criminal activities. Attempts to build something constructive are hampered by right-wing radicals who exhibit territorial behavior and sabotage the whole thing. Director Andreas Dresen's adaptation of Clemens Meyer's novel is a humorous yet somewhat dark drama that successfully captures the spirit of the times. The whole is accompanied by a great score.
The film manages to portray the characters strikingly in their struggle to pursue their own goals in an atmosphere of aggression and hopelessness, while simultaneously maintaining their mutual bonds of friendship. Particularly in terms of atmosphere, the film is somewhat reminiscent of La Haine (1995). However, because the narrative falters at times and occasionally disrupts the intense experience, the overall impact is slightly less than that of La Haine. The acting of the young cast is good, by the way. Slightly better than good are the main character Merlin Rose and the fascinating and beautiful Ruby O. Fee, who was unknown to me until this moment. I would certainly like to see some more of her film work.
In *Als Wir Träumten*, Andreas Dresen and screenwriter Michael Kohlhaase tell an interesting story about young people who are searching. Searching for a hopeful future. The film captivates with its humor, its realism, its subtle approach to the young protagonists' inner world, and the convincing acting. A fine film.
