He has been secretly in love with Mrs. Silver (Judi Dench) for years, but he is too shy to talk to her. One day he hears Mrs. Silver say that her turtle just won't grow. Mr. Hoppy takes his chance and concocts an impressive spell for her. At first the trick works, but then it gets completely out of hand.

Funny.

It has taken me longer to start the new year with a film from that same new year, this time it was apparently immediately a hit. I did not know Dahl's story (although I used to be a fan), but that did not detract from the experience in my opinion.

Esio Trot is a rather small - probably TV - film, although you have to pay close attention to see it. It feels more like a Jeunet for younger viewers. It sometimes feels a bit too empty, but otherwise it all looks nice and cozy and warm. Very cozy atmosphere that the film easily carries.

Corden's narration is strongly reminiscent of Jude Law, which is not a bad thing in itself to add some strength to the British atmosphere. Dench and Hoffman are funny as dusty old men, many small details that are typical of Dahl and an economical running time so that you are not locked in for two hours in what is otherwise a simple story.

Aimed at slightly younger viewers, but charming enough to gather fans outside of that. Anyone who used to be a Dahl fan would do well to pick this one up. Not a great gem, but a sweet and charming film.

3.0*

Wonderful kitsch. Everything exudes warmth: from the shy oaf that Dustin Hoffman plays and the cheerful lellebel that Judi Dench plays; to the bold color filter and the clumsy decors on the image and the crackling record music by Louis Armstrong on the sound. The fact that every smart mind has figured out the plot within a few minutes and that it presents nothing new, does not actually detract from the charm. It is so recognizable as Roald Dahl that the clumsy universe - somewhere between everyday recognizable and wonderfully magical - takes me along in its logic. Funny by the way: the only conflict in the storyline, Mr Pringle who also tries to seduce Mrs Silver, was not in the original picture book at all. In itself, that addition was necessary, because real turtles are simply less expressive than drawn ones, so the focus had to go to the human characters.

I had seen the commercial for this film on television. And because my boyfriend and I were both on holiday that week, we were able to watch this film “live” on TV the old-fashioned way. While the film has surprisingly many green screen moments – which are unfortunately too clearly green screen – the film is very sweet. I don’t know how else to describe Esio Trot haha. It’s very cute how an older man tries to impress another woman and loads his entire house with turtles to make her wish come true. Maybe not exactly the right tactic, but there is a sweet thought behind it. The film is not very special, although it does have a surprising moment. But it is quite nice as a snack as long as you don’t get too annoyed by the obvious green screen moments.
