Paradise Trips plot
Unwillingly, grumpy bus driver Mario has to take a colorful group of young people to a music festival in Croatia. Things don't go as planned and the journey soon turns into a fascinating one that confronts Mario with his prejudices and his prodigal son.

Gene Bervoets is masterful as a bitter bus driver who, as a retired gentleman who is used to taking elderly people to holiday destinations, suddenly has to transport hippies to a neo-hippie festival in Croatia.
The confrontation with his "lost" son and grandson is well developed with many tragicomic moments included.
Also nice are the few psychedelic "Super Mario" moments.

Paradise Trips has not become a milestone in Flemish film history. We do see a solid, but uninspiring drama in which fate brings two opposite worlds together, whether one likes it or not.
On the one hand, you have Mario, a conservative retired bus driver who has a rather negative and sullen outlook on life. He is married, but his marriage could do with a bit more life, although it won't be because of his wife. His son is a smouldering hippie and lives off heavenly dew and love when it's not prison food. At the Croatian festival, both are doomed to associate with each other.
Bervoets in particular does well and carries the film. Furthermore, the editing is quite well put together. However, the plot is too predictable and clichéd. Too bad.
