Mad Love plot

"A new, a strange, a gifted personality comes to the screen!"

Film adaptation of the book Les Mains d'Orlac by Maurice Renard. In Paris, the surgeon Dr. Gogol is in love with the theater actress Yvonne Orlac, but she is married to the famous pianist Stephen Orlac. When the latter loses his hands in a train accident, Yvonne asks Gogol if he can help. Gogol can no longer save Stephan's hands, but is willing to replace them with the hands of a deceased. What Stephen and Yvonne don't know, however, is that the deceased in question was a knife-throwing mass murderer.

Peter Lorre once again plays the madman and does this very well, the laughter of that man goes through the marrow.

Well staged movie.

The ghostly lighting heightens the horror of the story and emotions are perfectly portrayed by Frances Drake and Colin Clive, opposites of the once again dangerously eye-rolling Peter Lorre, well known for his appearances in adventure, mystery and horror films of the time, but also sometimes the comedic element in lighter comedies.

As a viewer , you receive a warning in advance via a voice - over that the film could be very shocking .

Nowadays that comes across as quite comical, but perhaps it was taken a lot more seriously at the time.

Atmosphere is there and Lorre is back on track as a creepy guy who is obsessed with a woman he can't have.
