Stagecoach plot

"These Were The Ten Who Fought Indians, Outlaws And Each Other As They Rode To Greatness On The Stagecoach To Cheyenne!"

Remake of the 1939 Wayne classic. A gang of Sioux led by Crazy Horse infest the Cheyenne area. The stagecoach to Cheyenne is about to leave when this news gets out. On board are Dallas, a saloongir; Peacock, a liquor merchant; Hatfield, a gambler; Doc Boone, a downtrodden doctor and drunk; Gatewood, a bank teller who has just robbed his bank, and the pregnant Mrs. Mallory, wife of the army captain of Cheyenne. The coach leaves anyway accompanied by the army and Marshall Curly. Along the way, they take the fugitive Ringo Kid with them. At the first stop, however, they only find the corpses of the army troop that had to accompany them further. They are faced with a choice: return or travel further.

I can't compare it to the original, but this film doesn't really hold my attention. A mediocre story with lots of dialogue and insight into the various characters, but there's simply not enough going on.
The final attack by the Indians isn't all that impressive either, and this scene clearly highlights the plot holes. An army of soldiers is massacred twice by the Sioux, and a stagecoach with some civilians can handle these Indians. The original with John Wayne is probably better. 5/10

When Howard Hawks made a remake of The Front Page (1931) in 1940 under the title His Girl Friday, film critic Otis Ferguson wrote: "The main trouble is that when they made The Front Page the first time, it stayed made." And in principle the same applies to this remake of the classic 1939 original, for without it this might well have been regarded as an unspectacular but otherwise decent action western. As it stands now, this remake can't, in my opinion, stand comparison with John Ford's classic, mainly because of Alex Cord who gives a decent performance but whose wimpy, cheap mouth and unfavorable appearance make it impossible for me to sympathize with him (as I managed to do with John Wayne, however much I don't find him a sympathetic or strong actor), but also a little because of Bing Crosby who plays Bing Crosby for almost the entire film and only briefly drops his jocular mannerisms during the delivery (and then almost immediately steals the film).
Positives include the reasonably good casting of the other characters (with Slim Pickens making a fine Andy Devine), the beautiful photography, the fairly powerful climax, which in the original takes place entirely off-screen, and the remarkably beautiful moment when Hatfield thanks Dallas for the way she assisted Mrs. Mallory during the delivery. Also of note: in the switch-up when Robert Cummings steals the bag containing the ten thousand dollars, the direction and/or editing refrain from drawing the viewer's attention to it with a separate close-up, which gave me the good feeling of being taken seriously. (I won't even mention the mass slaughter, where the Indians mindlessly throw themselves as much as possible into the path of the white man's bullets (only to return a moment later for a second helping!) All in all, quite decent.
