Mot naturen is a Norwegian arthouse film with a unique premise. Everything is told from the perspective of the not-always-sympathetic Martin. Martin appears to be a washed-up thirty-something with a family and a stable job, but he struggles through his slavish, boring life. To let off steam, he regularly goes on weekend runs in the mountains.

Throughout the film, you're presented with his fantasies and musings. These are often banalities, but also sexual fantasies or something more profound about his emotions (ranging from frustrations and pangs of conscience to his insecurities). The film's strength lies in the thoughtfulness with which they portray this. The filmmakers have succeeded in creating an honest, nuanced, and above all, relatable portrayal of "a train of thought" of a "regular" person, someone like you and me, for example.

Add to that the humorous note, the short running time, and the beautiful Norwegian flora setting, and you're good for almost 80 minutes. It's not earth-shattering, but I can appreciate it. A successful project indeed!

A man who has become a stranger in his own marriage ventures into nature to confront himself even more... harshly. It's a given, such a beautiful nature reserve in your immediate vicinity, but for this protagonist, it's a kind of private obstacle course. When you're too wrapped up in yourself, beauty is no longer spontaneous. Everything revolves around your own behavior patterns, considerations, and struggles.

I had a very, very hard time getting into the film because the directors chose to make Martin's train of thought explicit in voiceover, which initially left little room to accommodate all the non-verbal communication. The best literature offers a glimpse into the inner workings of a person, but when it comes to film, I rarely favor such a stylistic choice. I prefer to "see" it. It was a bit of a struggle for me, too, with the protagonist's overtly cynical mindset and the clumsy, shock-oriented way in which a conflict in his sexual orientation is depicted. For a moment I was really afraid that the complex powerlessness that Martin experiences as a father would be completely traced back to his latent homosexuality. Fortunately, the directors are ultimately more interested in the multi-layered nature of Martin's midlife crisis - the struggle that is being waged cannot be reduced to one facet, and in the last twenty minutes the stream of thought is also succinctly exchanged for played out drama. Add to that the pleasant and striking choice of music (besides the score by Ole Flattum ''Forever Young'' and the discovery ''The Moon is a Harsh Mistress'' by Radka Toneff) and I have to judge Out of Nature (how can I exactly understand that title from the Norwegian?) more favorably than what repeatedly crossed my mind during the first part.

Cool.

It's not too long, and therefore a quick interlude about a man who can't handle it all anymore. It delivers some relatable and some less relatable moments. Sometimes it makes for a funny scene, but for me, it could have been a bit drier. I also don't always think the voice-over was a success.
