"Family is where you find it"
Gilly Hopkins (Sophie Nélisse) is a brilliant, brash and totally unruly foster child. She makes a sport of alienating herself from any foster home she's placed in, until there's no choice but to reunite her with her real mother (Julia Stiles) in San Francisco. When she's placed with Maime Trotter (Kathy Bates), the strangest foster mom yet, she's convinced she'll soon make short work of her. However, to everyone's surprise, she begins to like her. But then suddenly her biological grandmother (Glenn Close) is on the doorstep and she is faced with a difficult choice.
