The first 15 minutes or so seem a bit slow to get going, but once the trip between father and son begins, the film really takes off.

It is mainly Robin Williams who makes this film worth seeing, not because he has unfortunately passed away in the meantime, but because he plays a role in this film that is more serious and blunt than the roles he became known for.

While it may not be the Christmas movie of the year, it managed to get through its slow start and is still worth picking up as a snack.

Luckily the running time of just 1 hour and 15 minutes was perfect for this film, it shouldn't have been much longer because then it could have become tedious

3 stars are definitely appropriate.

"Dedicated to the man who made us laugh."

This text is read after the credits of the film. After the actor's death, this film was recut. It was one of three films released after his death. This was Williams' second Christmas film. He was previously seen briefly in Noel (2004).

Despite his great acting, this movie is not really worth watching. There is no good chemistry between Joel McHale and Robin Williams. The warmth and Christmas spirit is mediocre. It is a great shame that this movie was not a success.

A moderate 2.5 *

In American films set during Thanksgiving or Christmas, years of suppressed family conflicts often erupt. Just as often, the conflict is played out under a layer of humor and feelgood and resolved towards the end of the film. A Merry Friggin' Christmas is no different. In the film, Robin Williams plays a bad-tempered head of the family who is not very fond of Christmas in one of his last roles. The film uses the conflict between his son and Christmas lover Boyd (Joel McHale) as the foundation for a predictable but also pleasant to watch Christmas film.

Because the film focuses on Williams and McHale, the other roles are somewhat overshadowed. The script leaves little room for the other characters to stand out. I wondered why the casting director had bothered to hire big names to do some inconspicuous acting. Oliver Platt is the exception. He has a small role but manages to stand out with his version of Santa Claus.

A Merry Friggin' Christmas is an entertaining film. The film has nice comic moments and alternates them with a bit of seriousness, a bit of sentiment and a bit of feelgood as befits a Christmas film. Not a film that will ever be called a Christmas classic. But just a nice Christmas film.
