Director Jake Helgren began his career with low-budget horror films, but with Varsity Blood, he demonstrates that he mastered the marketing more than the directing itself. The film boasts a fantastic poster and a captivating setting, but the cluttered visual direction quickly leads to a rather uninteresting progression. The murders are advantageous in that they are quite graphic, and the main characters' performances are not entirely without merit, but when the buildup is more interesting than the final escalation, something seriously goes wrong in a horror film. Towards the final half hour, Helgren uses almost exclusively (too) dark images and transparent horror effects, making it quite a challenge to make it through the final minutes. Beneath the thick film layers lies a certain potential, but judging by his subsequent projects, Helgren was done with ambition and challenge.
