Adam Sandler says he doesn't get too "shook up" about negative reviews on his movies, but does get concerned about his co-stars and family members reading less-than-generous comments online.
Sandler is one of the most bankable comedy stars of the last 25 years and initially hit fame with popular movies like Billy Maddison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy and Big Daddy.
In 2021, he signed a three-picture deal with Netflix worth $350 million.
Sandler has already received critical acclaim for some of his performances in movies like Funny People, The Meyerowitz Stories and Uncut Gems.
For Uncut Gems, he was considered to be a major contender for the Academy Award for Best Actor, but didn't even receive a nomination.
Throughout his career, he has made movies that have been panned, too.
On Rotten Tomatoes, he has numerous movies which rank lower than 10%, with The Ridiculous Six earning 0%. The Grown Ups series and movies like Jack and Jill, The Do Over and Bulletproof are also under 10%.
Sandler talks about bad reviews
For Sandler himself, though, he doesn't pay much attention to such reviews.
"Sometimes," he replied to AARP when asked if negative comments impact him.
"Mostly because I invite all these amazing people I care about to make movies with me, and I wish they didn’t have to read s*** about whatever we’ve made.
"But I don’t get too shook up.
"I always remember something my father said. He was a tough b******. He went through ups and downs in his life, like not having work for a year or two and not telling us.
"I recall one time that something didn’t go right for me. I bombed onstage or didn’t get an audition. I was upset and probably embarrassed. And he said, 'Adam, you can’t always be happy. People aren’t always going to like you. You’re going to fail.'
"I said, 'But I just want to be happy, man. I don’t want all that other crap.' He said, 'You won’t actually know you’re happy if you don’t feel that other stuff.' "
Sandler will next star in You Are SO Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah which will also star his family members Jackie, Sadie and Sunny.
