The Golden Globe Awards will add two major new categories for the 2024 edition of the ceremony this January.

Each year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decides on the nominations and, ultimately, the winners of the Golden Globes.

The ceremony is designed to celebrate the best of film and television over a range of disciplines from the period between 1st January and 31st December of the previous year.

The 2023 edition of the ceremony was hosted by Jerrod Carmichael and took place at the Beverly Hills Hilton in California on 11 January 2023.

Next year, performers and productions will be eligible for two new awards - The Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and The Award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy.

To be eligible for the first award, a movie needs to have grossed at least $150 million, with $100m coming in domestic ticket sales. Crucially, it must have artistic merit, too, so the likes of Barbie and Oppenheimer will probably be fighting for the award in the 2024 ceremony.

Streaming movies will be considered based on data from “recognized industry sources".

The complete eligibility criteria for the Box Office Award are as follows:

• Motion pictures are eligible for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award if they achieve a box office receipt total/gross of $150 million, of which $100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office, and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership recognized by trusted industry sources.
•Films that are released after November 22 up until the end of the year may qualify based on projected box office performance and/or digital streaming views from trusted industry sources.
• Cinematic and Box Office Achievement contenders can also be considered for Best Motion Picture in their respective categories, i.e., Drama, Comedy or Musical, Animated or Non-English Language if they meet the eligibility requirements for each of those awards.
• Box office and streaming views will determine eligibility; once a film meets the box office-related qualifying criteria or streaming criteria, Golden Globes voters will determine the nominees and winner based on excellence.
• A total of 8 nominees will be named for this category.

“The Golden Globes has a rich history of supporting and celebrating the work of comedians, and we’re thrilled to honour their brilliance alongside outstanding motion picture and television performances of the year,” Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne said in a statement.

“Additionally, we are proud to recognize the hard work and innovation that goes into making a film that is both a blockbuster and artistically exceptional.”
