Perhaps the best season!? The kick-off (a Christmas special) is a bit too much with the amount of twists and turns, but with 'The Bill' the series enters the well-known waters of the tragicomic, psychological horror. More than ever, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton use everyday scenes that degenerate into horrific catastrophes. This season unfortunately doesn't have any paranormal elements, as they seem to focus more on classic slashers and murder mysteries. 'The Riddle of the Sphinx' and 'Diddle Diddle Dumpling' are, as far as I'm concerned, the best of the series as they have the pitch black sadness of tragic figures who get lost in their own obsessions and neuroses. From the level of Roald Dahl's short stories. 'Empty Orchestra' will not be appreciated by everyone, but for me it is a pleasant change of style to see a light-hearted musical homage between all the vicious horror stories. 'Private View' is a nice nod to a modern icon like Saw and the classic thriller setup of Agatha Christie. The first sounds about season 4 are already encouraging; they seem to be siding with the SF and the tech thrillers.
