Born in the countryside, Tom Cooper takes on the role of head of the family after his father's sudden death. He wants to modernize and expand the family property and borrows money from the bank for this. When the Australian dollar crashes, causing interest rates to soar, rural areas also face a terrible drought. As a result, Tom and his wife Liz are confronted with debts that they can no longer pay. The bank threatens to sell their property and against the advice of lawyers, family and friends, Tom and Liz try the impossible: they decide to take the bank to court.
