Bezhig Little Bird is taken from her home in Saskatchewan's Long Pine Reserve at the age of five and adopted by a Jewish family in Montréal, where she becomes Esther Rosenblum. Now in her twenties, Bezhig longs for her lost family and is willing to sacrifice everything to find it again. Her quest takes her to the Canadian prairies, far away from everything she knows. As she begins to track down her siblings, she unravels the mystery behind her adoption. She learns that her adoption was related to a racist government policy now known as the Sixties Scoop. Bezhig's sense of identity shatters and she is forced to rethink who she is and who she wants to become.
