Lessons in Chemistry plot

The early 1950s. Elizabeth Zott's dream of becoming a scientist is challenged by a society that says women belong in the domestic sphere. When she is fired from her lab pregnant and alone, she calls upon the ingenuity that only a single mother has. Elizabeth takes a job as a host on a television cooking show. She decides to use the program to teach a nation of overlooked housewives - and the men who are suddenly listening - much more than recipes.

Chemist Elisabeth Zott (Brie Larson - The Marvels, Room) fights a tough battle against inequality in the US in the 1950s in the excellent Apple TV+ drama Lessons in Chemistry. A woman cannot be a chemist. Certainly not in a man's world, is the general opinion. And so Zott - in dire straits - makes her appearance in a TV afternoon program in which she serves dishes and chemical formulas as a TV chef. Her black neighbor - played by Aja Naomi King - is waging her own battle against racism. With unexpected plot twists, a smooth scenario, many jumps and large steps in time, there is a risk of confusion. That certainly doesn't happen. At a nice pace, Lessons in Chemistry has an attractive dose of light and heavy. Thematically, the series is reminiscent of Mad Men or the recent Carmen Curlers.

A single subplot, including the young life of fellow scientist and life partner Calvin Evans, is very widely discussed. It sometimes distracts from the actual story; how does Zott's life unfold? It is a criticism that can be surmounted. Cared for down to the last detail, Lessons in Chemistry looks like a colored polygon journal from a world long gone. And yet not. What makes Lessons in Chemistry special is Zott's character development. From aloof, rigid, maladjusted and straightforward scientist to empathetic, sharp and sympathetic do-gooder. With trial and error. Perhaps this change is exactly the softness and humanity that everyone now longs for.
