De Ronde plot

In Bruges, 198 riders and their entourage are getting ready for the 94th Tour of Flanders. A sea of supporters awaits them along the course, millions of others follow Flanders' most beautiful on radio or TV. With this historical edition as background, De Ronde tells the story of one day in Flanders, a day on which a number of people, just like the riders, have everything to gain or lose.

Serie die dringend in de herkijk moet maar met die gigantische verwachtingen die gecreëerd werden toen de serie ging uitkomen in het achterhoofd was dit een stevige tegenvaller, bepaalde verhaallijnen zoals de extreem-rechtse eikel deden me niks. Beelden van de ronde zelf waren (veel te) beperkt. En het werd allemaal net iets te zwartgallig zonder wat momenten om dat wat te verzachten vaak, vond ik. Als je moe kakken moe je kakken, wrsch het bekendste humoristische stuk maar ik vond het niet grappig. Jammer, misser(tje) van Eelen voor mij.

Series that urgently needs to be revisited, but with the gigantic expectations that were created when the series was released in the back of mind, this was a serious setback, certain storylines such as the far-right jerk did nothing for me. Images of the round itself were (far too) limited. And it all got a bit too gloomy without some moments to soften that a bit, I thought. If you're tired, you're tired, probably the most famous humorous piece, but I didn't think it was funny. Too bad, miss (little) van Eelen for me.

Voor mij was vooral de sfeer en dat herkenbare rond de ronde van Vlaanderen mooi om te zien. De pintjes op cafe of in de zetel voor de ronde, dat mediacircus, die vlaamse vlagjes,... Daarnaast kan je natuurlijk weer altijd op die kleine, maar zeer sterke vlaamse acteursvijver rekenen. Het verhaal daarentegen vond ik maar matig. Je had de ronde op zich en daar rondom zate allerlei verhaaltjes, maar ik kan niet echt zeggen of die iets met elkaar te maken hebben. Ik merk heel vaak dat bepaalde series in de media worden opgeklopt en dat mensen precies een serie beter gaan bekijken, maar het verhaal kwam te kort. Natuurlijk waren er wel enkele cultmomentjes zoals de kakkende dwerg, als je moet kakken moet je kakken,... Dat laatste horen we waarschijnlijk nog enkele jaren . Had beter gekund.

For me, especially the atmosphere and that recognizable around the Tour of Flanders was nice to see. The beers in the cafe or in the seat before the round, that media circus, those Flemish flags,... In addition, you can always count on that small, but very strong Flemish actor's pond. I, on the other hand, thought the story was mediocre. You had the round itself and there were all kinds of stories around it, but I can't really say whether they have anything to do with each other. I often notice that certain series are hyped in the media and that people are going to watch a series better, but the story fell short. Of course there were some cult moments like the pooping dwarf, if you have to shit you have to poop,... We'll probably hear that last one for a few years . Could have been better.

Het was een origineel idee om een miniserie rond de Vlaamse Wielerhoogmis te laten draaien. Er is eenheid van tijd, want alles speelt zich af op de dag van de Ronde. De vele simultane verhaallijnen hebben die wielerklassieker als spil. Sommige lijnen tonen de wielerervaring vanuit diverse standpunten: de regiekamer, de journalisten, de podiummeisjes, de V.I.P.'s, de reclamekaravaan, de toeschouwers en de tv-kijkers. Andere lijnen staan verder van de sport: de grasmachine, de Havana en de illegale euthanasie, maar toch is er altijd een link met de wedstrijd. Op die dag lijkt alles rond de Ronde te draaien, al gaat het gewone leven voort. De grens tussen realiteit en fictie is vaag. Commentatoren spelen zichzelf. In de volgwagens werden camera's geplaatst, zodat je de tactische richtlijnen van de ploegleiders kunt volgen. Echte wedstrijdbeelden worden afgewisseld met de fictie eromheen. Het gaat over de memorabele editie van 2010, toen Cancellara de Muur van Geraardsbergen bestormde. Het varieert van Vlaamse toilethumor tot zwaarmoedige tragiek. Uiteenlopende personages botsen met elkaar, staan voor een moreel dilemma en maken een evolutie door. Dankzij deze reeks weet ik wat vluchtmisdrijf in het Duits is: Fahrerflucht. Het bekendste citaat luidt: "O'j moe' kakk'n, moe-j' kakk'n!" Stefaan Degand brak door met deze rol, maar het is een hele ensemblecast. Veel van de bekendste Vlaamse acteurs spelen een knappe rol, te veel om op te noemen, met diverse regionale tongvallen. Je hoeft geen fanatieke wielerliefhebber te zijn om deze reeks te waarderen, want het is vooral een spiegel van de Vlaamse samenleving met al haar kleine en grote conflicten.

It was an original idea to have a mini-series revolve around the Flemish Cycling High Mass. There is unity of time, because everything takes place on the day of the Tour. The many simultaneous storylines have that cycling classic as their pivot. Some lines show the cycling experience from different points of view: the control room, the journalists, the podium girls, the VIPs, the advertising caravan, the spectators and the TV viewers. Other lines are further removed from the sport: the lawn mower, the Havana and the illegal euthanasia, but there is always a link with the race. On that day, everything seems to revolve around the Tour, even though normal life goes on.

The line between reality and fiction is vague. Commentators play themselves. Cameras were placed in the follow-up cars, so that you can follow the tactical guidelines of the team leaders. Real race footage is alternated with the fiction surrounding it. It is about the memorable edition of 2010, when Cancellara stormed the Muur van Geraardsbergen.

It ranges from Flemish toilet humor to melancholic tragedy. Diverse characters clash with each other, face a moral dilemma and go through an evolution. Thanks to this series I know what hit and run is in German: Fahrerflucht. The most famous quote is: "O'j moe' kakk'n, moe-j' kakk'n!"

Stefaan Degand broke through with this role, but it is a whole ensemble cast. Many of the best-known Flemish actors play a great role, too many to mention, with various regional accents. You don't have to be a fanatic cycling fan to appreciate this series, because it is mainly a mirror of Flemish society with all its small and large conflicts.
