Somewhat wry that even a series about the emergence of a (fictional) jazz band is almost entirely supported by white actors. Yet Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a nice role as a calculating bandleader who has to stand his ground against the open racism of the British High Society. Matthew Goode is a nice counterbalance to this as the archetypal lost reporter with grand ambitions in the reporting field. John Goodman is also fun as the quirky American business tiger with no scruples. The only thing that seriously falters is that the plot is forced to take on a thriller approach around a murder and having to escape from the authorities. In addition, the slow atmosphere setting mainly stands in the way of the build-up of tension.
