The first in a series of miniseries about Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh.

This is based on the eponymous boek.

Although it is certainly a murder mystery, things are always broadly set up (and elaborated), with various characters who initially have little or nothing to do with each other, but that gradually changes. The series also does not openly discuss all kinds of social topics, which makes it even more interesting. It often looks like a typical TV production, with quite a few studio interiors for indoor scenes, and the time frame is likely to be a problem for younger viewers. But there are also many charming outdoor locations, which sometimes almost make you feel like you're in an episode of Escape to the Country.

Chief Inspector Dalgliesh, I have not read the books, is portrayed extremely sympathetically by Roy Marsden. Sometimes the best man, the character, seems to be working a little too hard to become a mother-in-law's darling, which is then compensated by a certain intransigence and unadulterated modern (for the time certainly) opinions at times. Somewhere this series was compared to the miniseries of Miss Marple with Joan Hickson and that is a good comparison in terms of atmosphere and set-up. High-quality murder shows, beautiful locations, no rushed or exaggerated thriller elements, I like to see them.

Just short of five stars, so no rating for now, but I might change my mind in the future.
