The Ripper plot

Between 1975 and 1980, 13 women were murdered in West Yorkshire and Manchester. British police have no idea who the serial killer known worldwide as the Yorkshire Ripper is, not to mention an arrest. Through interviews with researchers, journalists, survivors and the families of victims, memories are recalled about the man who for years terrorized the north of England.

Reviews & comments

Solid four-part documentary series about serial killer Peter Sutcliffe (better known as "The Yorkshire Ripper"), who sowed terror in the United Kingdom in the period 1975-1981. Beautifully constructed from interesting archive material and contemporary interviews with those involved and skillfully put together, although the series is never really compelling or fascinating. It is just a bit too ordinary for that in terms of design and execution.

Perhaps even more interesting as an atmospheric portrait of the zeitgeist than as a true crime. As 'The Ripper' (2020) paints a picture of an emerging social awareness towards female victims of violence. Also not as exploitative as some serial killer documentaries, because it mainly deals with blind spots in the police investigation or the social impact of this case. In that respect 'The Yorkshire Ripper' is somewhat demystified as Peter Sutcliffe: he was nothing more or less than a jerk nobody with a twisted mind. At times disconcerting what turns there were to catch this Sutcliffe early on, but the murder investigation was hampered by false assumptions and media hype. It's easy to talk about afterwards, of course.
