A little less than previous seasons. 'Snowfall' now seems to really be trading in the social realism à la 'The Wire' for craziness. In this fifth season, the focus is mainly on how various characters become disillusioned by systems they themselves tried to set up. Their true nature comes to the surface when they are so sharply contrasted. Amusing? Most definitely. But as a social critique, it is thin to reduce everything to clashing egos. The series was already a bit over the top, but with atmospheric sketches of the bleak drug epidemic you got a feel for that community. Now, for example, you get a crazy subplotaround a tiger as a lame way to tie El Oso/Franklin together. But fortunately the series recovers when the chess pieces are set for a final season around a collapsing drug empire. Now we can only hope that 'Snowfall' lives up to expectations.
