Monsieur Spade plot

The year 1963, the Algerian War has just ended. The legendary Sam Spade is enjoying his retirement in the south of France. Unlike his days as a private investigator in San Francisco, Spade's life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet. But the possible return of his old opponent will change everything. Six beloved nuns are brutally murdered in the local convent. As the city mourns, secrets are revealed and new clues are uncovered. Spade learns that the murders are somehow connected to a mysterious child believed to have great powers.

Chiara Mastroianni. Jammer dat we maar zo weinig van haar te zien krijgen. Goed beschouwd nauwelijks meer dan een cameo, maar wel een belangrijke in het narratief dat fijn langzaam uitgelegd wordt. Tot het laatste deel dan, want dat voelt in vergelijking wat afgeraffeld. Clive Owen speelt wellicht zijn fijnste rol ooit, als Sam Spade, de onbenoemde koning van de film noir - cynisch geworden door het leven, maar nog steeds gekleed in zijn arbeidskleding, en ondanks zijn afkomst als Amerikaan welhaast de perfecte gentleman: 'someone who never gives offence unintentionally'. De locaties zijn mooi genoeg dat ik er de rest van mijn leven wel doorbrengen wil, de setting van het verhaal zit precies op het juiste snijvlak van onbekend en mysterieus. Eigenlijk maar een klein puntje van kritiek: de casting van Cara Bossom ligt me niet. Hoe zeg je dat ook alweer - het ligt aan mij, niet aan haar. Maar verder een geniale cast met fraaie karakters, van de politieman met zijn maffe broer tot de kroegbazin, van de dokter tot de moeder-overste. En natuurlijk Chiara Mastroianni als de onovertrefbare Gabrielle, en wat een wereldwijf is dat. Ik droom van een tweede seizoen, dat mag wel duidelijk zijn.

It's a shame we only get to see so little of her. All things considered, hardly more than a cameo, but an important one in the narrative that is explained nicely and slowly. Until the last part, because that feels a bit run-down in comparison.

Clive Owen plays perhaps his finest role ever, as Sam Spade, the unappointed king of film noir - cynical through life, but still dressed in his work clothes, and despite his origins as an American, almost the perfect gentleman: 'someone who never gives offense unintentionally'. The locations are beautiful enough that I want to spend the rest of my life there, the setting of the story is just the right intersection of unknown and mysterious.

Actually just a small point of criticism: I don't like the casting of Cara Bossom. How do you say that again - it's on me, not her. But otherwise a brilliant cast with beautiful characters, from the policeman with his crazy brother to the pub owner, from the doctor to the Mother Superior. And of course Chiara Mastroianni as the incomparable Gabrielle, and what a cosmopolitan woman she is.

I dream of a second season, that is clear.
