Prima eerste seizoen voor deze Marvel superheld, met een wijselijk meer realistische en rauwe aanpak. Dertien afleveringen is iets teveel van het goede, maar grotendeels weet de reeks wel te boeien, vooral door de fraaie rol van Vincent D'Onofrio als bad guy Wilson Fisk. Daar steken de good guys toch een beetje flets tegen af. Maar goed, de personages zijn sympathiek genoeg en er valt te genieten van veel virtuoos in beeld gebrachte aktiescenes en een lekker grimmig, duister sfeertje.

Great first season for this Marvel superhero, with a wisely more realistic and raw approach. Thirteen episodes is a bit too much of a good thing, but for the most part the series manages to captivate, especially due to the beautiful role of Vincent D'Onofrio as bad guy Wilson Fisk. The good guys are a little sluggish about that. Anyway, the characters are sympathetic enough and you can enjoy a lot of virtuoso action scenes and a nice grim, dark atmosphere.

Veel mensen vinden Daredevil langdradig, en eerlijk gezegd snap ik dat ook wel. Toch werkt dat trage tempo voor mij juist heel goed. De serie neemt de tijd om het verhaal te vertellen en de personages te laten groeien. Het voelt daardoor zwaarder en serieuzer aan dan veel andere superheldenseries. Er zit niet constant actie in, maar dat mis ik totaal niet. Wanneer er wél actie is, zijn de scènes sterk, rauw en goed opgebouwd. Wel merk je dat de serie erg donker is gefilmd; soms zelfs zo donker dat het afleidt. Dat stoorde me af en toe, maar het past ook wel bij de sombere sfeer van de serie. Wat ik vooral waardeer, is dat de serie laat zien dat een goede serie niet per se vol actie hoeft te zitten. Het draait hier meer om spanning, verhaal en morele keuzes, en dat spreekt mij aan. De acteurs doen het prima en de sfeer zit er van begin tot eind goed in. Al met al vond ik seizoen 1 sterk en meeslepend, juist doordat het de tijd durft te nemen.

Many people find Daredevil tedious, and honestly, I understand that. Yet, that slow pace works really well for me. The series takes its time telling the story and developing the characters. As a result, it feels heavier and more serious than many other superhero series.

There's not constant action, but I don't miss it at all. When there is action, the scenes are powerful, raw, and well-constructed. However, you notice that the series is filmed in a very dark way; sometimes so dark that it's distracting. That bothered me at times, but it also fits the somber atmosphere of the series.

What I especially appreciate is that the series shows that a good show doesn't necessarily have to be action-packed. It's more about suspense, story, and moral choices, and that appeals to me.

The actors do a great job, and the atmosphere is good from start to finish. All in all, I found season 1 strong and compelling, precisely because it dares to take its time.

Bijzonder is het allerminst om een rauwe Marvel productie te bekijken. Daredevil is in deze serie een soort personificatie van hoe ik mezelf een Batman voorstel zonder een gelimiteerde leeftijdsgrens en dat is meteen ook de serie zijn grootse charme. De vechtscenes weten absoluut te imponeren. De scene waarbij Daredevil het ontvoerde kind gaat bevrijden is denk ik wel het hoogtepunt van seizoen 1 wat betreft de vechtscenes. Dat heeft ook voornamelijk te maken, omdat daar het camerawerk uitblinkt. Dat is iets wat verder dit seizoen vrij matig is. Evenals de belichting. Sommige scènes zijn zo donker geschoten, dat het zelfs met een OLED tv nog niet goed zichtbaar is. De serie wordt vaak erg geprezen, zeker in de superhelden community. Daarom had ik er ook wel wat van verwacht, maar het heeft lang geduurd voordat het me echt wist te boeien. De eerste twee afleveringen waren interessant en maakte indruk, maar daarna werd al snel langdradig. Ik vond het narratief vrij onduidelijk, vanuit Daredevil, maar ook vanuit Fisk. Althans, ik vond de motieven erg onbeladen en dat had impact op de spanning. Het verhaal bevat weinig complexiteit en leunt vooral op het vechten. Wat oké is, maar dan zijn dertien afleveringen van 59 minuten, wel iets teveel van het goede. Het heeft daarom voor mij ook tot de laatste aflevering geduurd, voordat Wilson Fisk echt als villian op mij een impact maakte en dacht ja, nu zie ik eindelijk de dreiging. Want begrijp me niet verkeerd de potentie als sterke villian is meteen zichtbaar, maar het komt niet goed uit de verf meteen. Al met al, prima eerste seizoen en ben benieuwd naar seizoen 2.

It is by no means unusual to watch a raw Marvel production. In this series, Daredevil is a kind of personification of how I imagine a Batman without a limited age limit, and that is also the series' greatest charm.

The fight scenes are absolutely impressive. The scene where Daredevil goes to free the kidnapped child is, I think, the highlight of season 1 in terms of fight scenes. That is mainly because the camerawork excels there. That is something that is otherwise quite mediocre this season. As is the lighting. Some scenes are shot so dark that they are not clearly visible even on an OLED TV.

The series is often highly praised, especially in the superhero community. That is why I had high expectations, but it took a long time before it really managed to captivate me. The first two episodes were interesting and impressive, but after that, it quickly became tedious. I found the narrative quite unclear, both from Daredevil's and from Fisk's. At least, I found the motives very superficial, and that impacted the suspense. The story lacks complexity and relies mainly on the fighting. Which is fine, but then thirteen 59-minute episodes are a bit too much of a good thing.

That is why it took until the last episode for Wilson Fisk to really make an impact on me as a villain and for me to think, yes, now I finally see the threat. Because make no mistake, the potential as a strong villain is immediately visible, but it doesn't quite come across right away.

All in all, a great first season, and I'm looking forward to season 2.
