Life after Life plot

Ursula Todd is born one night in 1910, but dies immediately in the arms of her parents Sylvie and Hugh. On that same evening in 1910, Ursula is born again; but this time she survives. Life after life she is born again. Sometimes she dies, sometimes she lives, under different circumstances. We, according to Ursula, during these lives, in which she meets Hitler and experiences other intense things. But why does Ursula try so hard to survive every time? And is there such a thing as a perfect life?
