Tenspeed and Brown Shoe plot

Lionel Whitney is a private investigator who is a bit stuck and obsessed with crime novels. His idol is Mark Savage (a fictional detective) much to the chagrin of EL "Tenspeed" Turner, his colleague, a petty crook on parole and a master of the art of disguise.
