A lonely old man has been haunted by nightmares and evil ghosts from the past for over sixty years. He carries with him a terrible secret that he has kept secret from the outside world all this time. But when one stormy night he is again besieged by the ghosts, the fatal story plays out one last time before his eyes. It takes him back to the summer of 1942. Two young people, the Dutch folk German Hans Hallerbach and the Jewish Vera Weinberg, have been playing a dangerous game for two years to maintain their forbidden love. Both families try to end the relationship. But when the Germans start the deportation of all Dutch Jews that summer, the danger gets closer and closer.
