Vera plot

Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope lives in the North East of England. This workaholic lady won't let herself be boxed in. Dressed in her oversized dresses, usually paired with a pair of chunky wellies, she's the police team's terror. She is strict with almost everyone except her right-hand man Joe Ashworth. She's on top of every murder case in quiet Northumberland. The stern Chief Inspector may seem tough, but has a small heart. Combined with her bravery, cynical sense of humor and high intelligence, she tries to bring every case to a successful conclusion.

Season 7 (last year on the Belgian, from February 14 on the Dutch) is also worth watching. There weren't many real surprises, and the formula is pretty much always the same: a corpse, a first glaring suspect, a few quips leading up to several other suspects, and an extra dash of action and suspense at the end, and you're done. And invariably the melancholic slant of Vera herself, which she always puts herself over with unyielding fearlessness and some gallows humor (and possibly a bit of fun).

Brenda Blethyn portrays a believable and memorable character (that crackling squeaky voice too) that's fun to follow in her quest for the truth. Her entourage (first it was the one for a while, now the other, one was killed and Kenny is the stay) is doing fine and the atmosphere, soundtrack and what not are very rewarding. All in all (still) a nice addition to the detective genre.
