Vera plot

Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope lives in the North East of England. This workaholic lady won't let herself be boxed in. Dressed in her oversized dresses, usually paired with a pair of chunky wellies, she's the police team's terror. She is strict with almost everyone except her right-hand man Joe Ashworth. She's on top of every murder case in quiet Northumberland. The stern Chief Inspector may seem tough, but has a small heart. Combined with her bravery, cynical sense of humor and high intelligence, she tries to bring every case to a successful conclusion.

Not quite sure why, but Vera often reminds me of Vrouwtje Thelepel (haven't seen it in years - isn't on TvMeter by the way...). Another 'new' (anno 2011) detective and another one that has caught on quite well and has been for seasons. Vera is a sober (in a sense) as well as a charming character (who constantly addresses everyone with 'love' and 'pet'), the murder cases are very nicely spun out with the necessary twists & turns and all kinds of side issues and characters add some jeu. ready for a concept (whodunnit with a haunted sleuth as lead) that should have been in a state of decomposition for years - pretty clever!

Great series. Can watch all seasons via NPO start +. For some viewers it all goes too slowly but what a detective series.

Beautiful environmental images, credible story construction and the actress who plays Vera is just great. Rest of the cast too. Regularly I sit there with goose bumps and a hand for my basket watching.
