Nancy was beautiful, wealthy, and loved by all who knew her—from the outside, her life seemed perfect. But as the investigation into her death stalls and her friends Eleanor and Mary grapple with their grief, dark details emerge that reveal how little they knew their friend, each other, and perhaps even themselves.

Imperfect Women is een achtdelig Amerikaans drama dat duidelijk in het spoor zit van series als Big Little Lies, The Undoing en Little Fires Everywhere. De serie komt traag op gang, maar weet vanaf de derde aflevering steeds meer te overtuigen. Centraal staat de complexe band tussen drie totaal verschillende vriendinnen, verweven met een moordmysterie dat zich via sprongen in de tijd ontvouwt. Die structuur werkt verrassend goed: de spanning wordt zorgvuldig opgebouwd en leidt uiteindelijk naar een overtuigende maar voor de hand liggende finale. De drie vrouwelijke hoofdrollen worden solide neergezet (met zo’n cast kan het ook bijna niet anders), binnen een scenario dat levendig en spitsvondig is. Toch is niet alles even sterk. Zoals vaker in Amerikaans drama blijven sommige personages — vooral in de bijrollen — aan de oppervlakte. Dat neemt niet weg dat Imperfect Women overeind blijft als een intrigerende en sfeervolle zoektocht naar leugens, schuld en verlossing, en ondanks imperfecties blijft boeien.

Imperfect Women is an eight-part American drama that clearly follows in the footsteps of series like Big Little Lies, The Undoing, and Little Fires Everywhere. The series gets off to a slow start but becomes increasingly convincing from the third episode onwards. At its center is the complex bond between three completely different friends, interwoven with a murder mystery that unfolds through jumps in time. That structure works surprisingly well: the tension is carefully built up and ultimately leads to a convincing but predictable finale.

The three female lead roles are solidly portrayed (with such a cast, it could hardly be otherwise), within a script that is lively and witty. Yet, not everything is equally strong. As is often the case in American drama, some characters—especially in the supporting roles—remain superficial. That does not detract from the fact that Imperfect Women holds up as an intriguing and atmospheric quest for lies, guilt, and redemption, and continues to captivate despite its imperfections.
