The Tower plot

An experienced cop and a teenage girl die in a high-rise block in south-east London. A five-year-old boy and rookie Lizzie Griffiths are left behind on the roof, but are missing. Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins is deployed to find Lizzie before she is seriously injured, as well as to uncover the truth behind the horrific deaths at the tower block.

The third season of The Tower features an excellent lead role for Gemma Whelan as Detective DS Sarah Collins. Whelan (DI Ray, Gentleman Jack) gives her role an unmistakable character of her own. Writer and producer Patrick Harbinson (Homeland, Law & Order; Special Victims Unit) adapted Kate London's book into a smooth police drama. The case that this third season revolves around is a stabbing with fatal consequences.

Strong women call the shots in The Tower. Where the second season took a liberties with gender equality in the British police, this third season takes a nasty revenge; we see a single policewoman with a child, a lesbian couple, a woman who throws her husband/inspector out of the house and a female detective who simply goes to pick up the children from school after a 24-hour shift. And a little later tells her supervisor: 'you're weird'. All of this with astonishing naturalness. It works in The Tower.
