I've now seen the first two seasons. Very good. The second season faltered a bit halfway through, but that was completely made up for in the final episode. Both seasons tell well-crafted crime stories with various deceptions. Fortunately, the pace remains good: not too many worries besides the main story, so the running time is also the perfect length. And what a relief that she has a boss who cooperates instead of obstructing, as in many other series. Lyle gives a great character, although from the start I strongly felt she was trying to imitate Sofia Helin (as Saga) from Bron (Series, 2011 - 2018). I hope we don't have to wait three years for a third season.

In season two, Detective Sergeant Karen Pirie works on a compelling 40-year-old cold case. Pirie is outspoken, honest, and simply a great colleague. This second season is no different. All the boxes are ticked: a captivating crime case, good actors, and solid British quality. The frequent flashbacks to 1984 connect credibly with the present-day story and provide a clear, compelling narrative.
Yet, this season is a fraction less fresh and original than the first. Episode three, in particular—when the cold case team travels to Malta—feels silly and predictable. It's also striking that the detectives' private lives are barely touched upon. The finale is okay, but transparent. In short, Karen Pirie is a fine crime series that just doesn't quite win it over to rank among Unforgotten, The Missing, and Broadchurch.

A very good series. Season 1 was already excellent, and season 2 is no less so. Lyle plays a no-nonsense detective with a sense of humor. The rest of the cast is also excellent, with Cosmo excelling. He's a natural at these kinds of roles. The plot was a bit weaker than in season 1, but the finale more than made up for it. Worth a 4**** for me.
