Beef plot

'Beef' follows the aftermath of a traffic incident between two strangers. Danny Cho, a failed contractor with a bad temper, goes head to head with Amy Lau. She is a self-made entrepreneur with a picturesque life. The growing stakes of their feud unravels their lives and relationships, bringing out the worst in them.

Beef is tegelijk een wraakdrama en zwarte komedie. In deze anthologieserie raken twee stellen, samen met hun Koreaanse bazen, verstrikt in een meedogenloos systeem van hyperkapitalisme, terwijl ze elkaar steeds verder naar het leven staan. Alle personages jagen zonder scrupules de top van de piramide na, al is daar maar voor enkelen plaats. Een tweede rode draad is de liefde — of beter gezegd: wat daar nog van overblijft. Net als in het eerste seizoen voelt Beef uiteindelijk als veel gedoe om weinig. De serie mist de verfijnde klasse, het subtiele venijn en de scherpe dialogen van The White Lotus. Ondanks het indrukwekkende sterrenensemble weet Beef daardoor maar beperkt indruk te maken; zelfs Carey Mulligan overtuigt niet altijd en slaat soms door in overacteren.

Beef is simultaneously a revenge drama and a black comedy. In this anthology series, two couples, along with their Korean bosses, become entangled in a ruthless system of hypercapitalism while turning increasingly desperate for each other's lives. All the characters ruthlessly chase the top of the pyramid, even though there is only room for a select few. A second recurring theme is love — or rather, what is left of it.

Just like in the first season, Beef ultimately feels like a lot of fuss about little. The series lacks the refined class, subtle venom, and sharp dialogue of The White Lotus. Despite the impressive cast, Beef consequently manages to make only a limited impression; even Carey Mulligan is not always convincing and sometimes overacts.
