Overall, I thought this series was good.

It's refreshingly original and honest.

It is about the fortunes of a marginal family.

It's not always believable, but that doesn't really bother us.

The series gets a bit weaker towards the end, especially the last episode, but overall I had a good time watching this miniseries.

Irresistible light surreal Australian drama about the complex life of a boy (Felix Cameron) who tries to survive in 1983 Brisbane. In terms of tone and plot, the miniseries bounces in all directions, but everything is expertly kept on track by the great cast. Newcomer Cameron plays a sublime role in the leading role, but more established names such as Travis Fimmel, Bryan Brown and Simon Baker also do a great job here. Visually it all looks beautiful too. Occasionally things get a bit sluggish, especially when certain unlikely plot lines present themselves, but fortunately that never lasts long. Based on the book of the same name by Trent Dalton.

That was tough. The intention is nice, although I always have to get used to it being told largely from the perspective of a child. The mix of genres works reasonably well; the crime side is a lot more interesting than the family drama, even though it sometimes takes a lighter tone. The drama is also so exaggerated, it just gets worse and worse that it overshoots its effect. And gradually it sometimes even becomes a bit childish, as if it were a child's adventure. The little guy steals the show, but not always in the good way; the fickleness is sometimes quite irritating. Furthermore, the acting is fine. To make the time jump from the 5th to the 6th episode with a different main actor is daring; that seems to work for a while, but unfortunately.

Although it wasn't really up my alley, I always want to watch at least one season (or in this case the entire mini-series) to be able to give a good opinion. Unfortunately, the final episode was by far the low point. I honestly don't understand why that episode still gets such a high rating. I'm going to give the entire series 2 full points deduction for it, despite the nice intentions in the first episodes. Because this feels kind of torn away from the rest, where the emphasis was much more on the drama. It is suddenly a kind of detective crime, extremely thin and packed with cringe-worthy clichés. We were constantly treated to loads of drama and horror, and now it really ends in a fairy tale where everything turned out fine and everyone is happy. Really gagging. Where before I really hoped for a more light-hearted tone, here I started hoping that at least one main character would not survive. That says enough. Terrible effect.
