About the legal and political tug-of-war surrounding social housing in middle-class white neighborhoods. Oscar Isaac is unparalleled as Nick Wasicsko, who climbs to the top: someone who has mastered networking in the we-knows-us world at the top, who knows how to put his charms and bravado into battle as a young dog. must throw. But then he loses popularity, old friends turn against him, and he has to watch with dismay how politics makes or breaks his image. The great thing is that the plot takes you back every episode in the personal euphoria, desperation, hope and disillusionment of this positive comeback kid. You grant him the moment when he can finally reap the benefits of his political tenacity in the once complicated issue of rental housing.
Parallel to the rise and possible fall of Wasicsko are the isolated stories of several ethnic minorities in a poor working-class neighbourhood. Not what you expect from the collaboration Paul Haggis/David Simon, but it is precisely those (mainly) multi-ethnic sidelines that don't quite come out. They feel a little too much like being dragged in to get a similar bond as with the central mayor. Yet the contraction of Wasicsko's political reality with the consequential damage on these characters is a strong element thematically. It dismantles political decision-making as a cumbersome monster that opposes social developments instead of offering the space to adequately draw attention to difficult issues.

Excellent six-part HBO miniseries about the poignant way in which social housing in white neighborhoods in 1980s Yonkers divides the residents of the city. Impressively put together, with a great cast and striking dialogues. Nice time frame too. The complex political situation is portrayed in a very entertaining way by director Paul Haggis. Often very funny, but that doesn't detract from the emotional punch of the whole.

Excellent mini-series in which a new mayor is forced to build social housing in the middle class neighborhood. The different storylines are fairly layered and complex and work on both a macro and micro level. But it all remains insightful, which makes this an exciting session. The strong cast tops it off. Top TV.
